Sammy the Squirrel
Sammy the squirrel has moved to every neighborhood in Florida I have ever lived. I first noticed him around 1977 when my second son was born. I didn’t pay much attention back then. We had such a busy life so who had time to talk to the squirrel who would drop by for Fritos every time we were outside.
In 1980 we moved to Lake Mary and Sammy must have jumped into the moving van because it was not long before we spotted him jumping from tree to tree in our back yard.
Every night I would get a book to read to my son. One night he pushed the book aside and said, “No, tell me about Sammy.” I started a story about Sammy moving at the same time we did. Sometimes he would get lost on his way because he would get distracted and follow some little boys who started skipping school. Of course Sammy got in trouble but someone would come along and help.
This continued for months and I told basically the same story every night but would add something new because I was making it up as I went. One night my 5 year old son suddenly stopped me in the middle of getting started and said, “No Mom, that is not how the story goes.” He then proceeded to tell me Sammy’s story – about him getting lost in the woods and his mother and Dad came and found him about the time it was getting dark.
I have been in this neighborhood for five years and not long ago I was on my morning walk when I saw this squirrel watching me. I believe it was Sammy’s Grandsquirrel and I am sharing his picture with you. He brings a smile to my face every time I see him because it brings back wonderful memories. It is time to give him a name – maybe the little ones next door already know his name.
